Enter the water you used and the price per cubic metre. Many bills add a price for wastewater (Abwasser), a fixed fee and tax: add those too to see the total and your all-in price per m³.

Enter your values

Cubic metres for the billing period. 1 m³ = 1000 litres.
Where do I find this?

The bill shows the consumption in m³. Or read the water meter twice and subtract the first reading from the second.

If you know litres, divide by 1000.

From your bill or the water supplier's tariff.
Where do I find this?

Look for 'price per m³', 'Wasserpreis' or 'Frischwasser'. If the price is per litre, multiply by 1000. 2.00 is only an example.

Many places charge for sewage by the same m³. Leave 0 if your bill has none.
Where do I find this?

Look for 'Abwasser', 'Schmutzwasser' or 'wastewater' on the bill. Some places charge it separately, others include it in the water price. 2.50 is only an example.

Base fee or meter fee for the same period.
Where do I find this?

Enter the amount for the whole billing period, not per month, unless the bill covers one month.

Leave 0 if your prices already include tax.

How it is calculated

  • Water cost = m³ × water price; wastewater cost = m³ × wastewater price
  • Bill = (water + wastewater + fixed fee) × (1 + tax ÷ 100)
  • All-in price per m³ = bill ÷ m³

Example

120 m³ at 2.00 for water and 2.50 for wastewater is 240 + 300 = 540. With no fee and no extra tax the bill is 540, an all-in price of 4.50 per m³.

What this estimate leaves out

Tiered tariffs, rain-water charges and advance payments are not included. Your supplier's bill is the final amount.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my water bill?

Multiply the cubic metres by the water price, add the wastewater charge (often the same m³ times a second price) and the fixed fee, and add tax if your prices are net.

How many litres are in a cubic metre?

One cubic metre is 1,000 litres.

How much water does a person use?

It varies a lot. The best figure is your own: divide the m³ on your last yearly bill by the number of people and 365 days.

Why is the price per m³ on my bill higher than the water price?

Because wastewater, the fixed fee and tax are often added. The all-in price per m³ shows the real cost.
