Choose how to split: evenly between a number of people, or by consumption using the readings of each submeter. Fair splitting by usage is how landlords and shared households usually settle electricity, water and gas.

Even is simplest; by consumption is fairer when usage differs.

How it is calculated

  • Evenly: your share = total bill ÷ number of people
  • By consumption: your share = total bill × your consumption ÷ total consumption

Example

A 240 bill shared by 3 people is 80 each. By consumption, 350 out of 1,200 units is 29.2 %, so your share is 240 × 350 ÷ 1,200 = 70.

What this estimate leaves out

Fixed fees are sometimes split evenly and only the usage part by consumption. Landlords in some countries must follow legal rules for allocating costs (for example the German Heizkostenverordnung); this calculator is for simple cases.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I split a utility bill fairly?

Split it by consumption: your share is the total bill times your consumption divided by the total consumption. This needs a meter or submeter for each person or flat.

How do I split an electricity bill between roommates?

Evenly if everyone uses about the same, or by consumption with a submeter for each room or device. You can also split the fixed fee evenly and the usage part by consumption.

What if there are no submeters?

Then an even split, or a split by number of people or by floor area, is the practical way. Agree on the rule before the bill arrives.

What is a submeter?

A meter after the main meter that measures the consumption of one flat, room or device, so the bill can be shared by actual use.
