How it is calculated

  • 1 kWh = 1000 Wh = 3.6 MJ = 0.0036 GJ
  • 1 BTU = 1,055.056 joules, so 1 kWh = 3,412.14 BTU
  • 1 US therm = 100,000 BTU = 29.3 kWh
  • 1 kcal = 4,184 joules, so 1 kWh = 860.42 kcal

Example

1 kWh is 3.6 MJ, about 3,412 BTU, 0.0341 therm and about 860 kcal.

What this estimate leaves out

Gas bills often also convert volume (m³) to energy with a calorific value: see the Gas m³ to kWh Calculator. The therm here is the US therm; the UK therm (105.5 MJ) is almost the same.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How many BTU are in a kWh?

One kilowatt-hour is about 3,412 BTU.

How many MJ is a kWh?

One kilowatt-hour is exactly 3.6 megajoules (MJ).

How many kWh is a therm?

One US therm (100,000 BTU) is about 29.3 kWh.

How do I convert gas m³ to kWh?

Volume is not energy: multiply the m³ by the calorific value of the gas (kWh per m³) shown on your gas bill. The Gas m³ to kWh Calculator does this.
