How the Pieces Connect

Devices report through a lightweight agent and an encrypted message broker, energy systems connect through standard energy protocols, and consumption data enters UtilityControl.

QLines architecture: Devices run the QLines agent and connect over encrypted MQTT to the QLines message broker; EnergyOS shows device data in the browser over HTTPS. Energy devices such as inverters, heat pumps and meters connect through energy adapters (Modbus, SunSpec, EEBus, OCPP) to the Energy Intelligence analysis layer. Meter readings, CSV files and bill photos go into UtilityControl, used in the browser and in the iOS and Android apps. Servers are located in Germany. Protocols

Protocols and Interfaces

Protocols and interfaces of the QLines platform
Protocol or interfaceWhat it is used for
MQTT over TLSDevice agents publish telemetry and receive commands over an encrypted MQTT connection (port 8883), with credentials and an access list per device.
HTTPS and REST APIWeb dashboards, the iOS and Android apps, and integrations with partner systems.
Modbus TCP / RTUInverters, heat pumps, batteries and energy meters.
SunSpecStandardized Modbus models for PV inverters and battery storage.
EEBus and SG ReadyHeat pumps and other controllable devices, including grid-friendly operation.
OCPPEV charging stations: status, sessions and charging control.
M-Bus and wireless M-BusHeat, water and gas meters.
SML and DLMS/COSEMSmart meters and smart meter gateways.
CSV import and exportMeter readings in and out of UtilityControl, per meter or per location.
Security & data protection

How Your Data Is Protected

  • Device connections are encrypted (TLS) and every device has its own credentials and access list on the message broker.
  • Remote commands run without a shell and with a time limit; every command and its result is logged.
  • UtilityControl and EnergyOS have separate accounts; sign-in and public endpoints are rate limited.
  • Our servers are located in Germany.

FAQ

Questions About Our Technology

Is there an API?

Yes. Partners integrate through a REST API over HTTPS. Request access through the contact page.

Which devices run the QLines agent?

Remote devices that can run Python, such as a Raspberry Pi or a small industrial PC with Debian or Ubuntu. Energy devices without the agent, such as inverters or meters, connect through the energy protocols above.
